I think linearization result item is not available on a model with cyclic symmetry.  Pls check the manual; this issue sounds familiar to me.  You may have to switch to symmetry and re-run to be able to use linearization.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately the manual isn't clear, at least not as I could find.

It's a particularly frustrating bug, as a long time classic/APDL user, I'm used to being able to extract linearised stresses from models with cyclic symmetry and as a recent convert to Workbench, with all its bells and whistles, I was expecting at least this minimal functionality, so quite disappointed as you can imagine that it was missing.

However, I have found a solution, which I'm sharing for any others who may have this issue in the future. And it doesn't require the use of standard symmetry, which is often not appropriate for asymmetrical-but-cyclic geometry.

First I refer you to knowledge base item 2022347 which clearly indicates that linearisation under cyclic symmetry is not possible. The workaround requires the use of an APDL command snippet under the solution tree as demonstrated in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mv4bTvkaHmU by the guys at SimuTech. The advantage of this method is the cyclic nature of your model is maintained and cut planes do not need to be radial as long as geometry and nodes perfectly match. The results are excellent compared with true cyclic symmetry, tested under ANSYS 19.1.

I hope this helps others as it has helped me! And I hope this is something ANSYS will include in future releases as standard.

Ross Hartwig

I just have to say, that SimuTech video is remarkably clear and well done.  I am impressed when I see that kind of methodical, efficient clarity of explanation.  I remember stumbling on another video in the past with the same narrator, and thought the same thing at that time.

They have really good material. Their written tutorials are as good as this video.

They have (or had, it's been a while) a blog where they would showcase some ansys functionalities, everything well written and illustrated. I recommend everyone to check it out.

(Simutech, I'm expecting my ad check for the end of this month =P)
