Folks,
I would like to know if it is possible to create a Cartesian coordinate system in Mechanical whose principal axis aligns between two nodes. In other words, I want to place the origin of the coordinate system at a specific node. I want its X axis to point directly towards another nearby node in the model. I know the CS command in APDL will do it, but I cannot find a way to do this in Mechanical.

Hi Matt,
If I understood your problem correctly, that's straight forward, I guess.
You can follow the steps as follows:
1- Right click and create a new coordinate system in the model tree. By default, it will be cartesian.
2- Now go down to Details section on the bottom left side. In the origin section change the "Define By" value to Geometry selection. Now u can click the node where you want to place ur origin of the new coordinate system. The direction of each axis will be aligned to the global coordinate system at this point.
3- Now go to the principal axis section, The Axis will be "X" by default. Below it there is a section "Define By" Change it to "Geometry selection". Now pick the second node towards which you want to align ur X-axis.
This should be it. Let me know if this works.
Thanks
Anjum

Small Correction in Step 3
You should pick both the nodes (origin and Second node) when defining the direction of the X-axis.
Thanks

Anjum,
Thank you! Someone else shared the same tip with me. It wouldn't work initially when I only selected the second node for step 3. I incorrectly assumed it would auto-detect the first node at the origin, but I guess not.
Nevertheless, thank you!
-Matt
