Hello,
When passing a string to the operating system, using command /sys, I get an error message saying that the command "cmd.exe" is wrong or not found.
We're using Ansys MAPDL v15 in a Windows 10 computer.
File cmd.exe is under folder C:\Windows\SysWOW64
The environment variables are OK: ANSYS_SYSDIR points to winx64 and ANSYS_SYSDIR32 to win32.
Any idea what could be wrong?
Thank you very much in advance.
Best regards,

I don't have the exact answer for you, but from experience, I can say that my success with /SYS is 50/50. I think it is usually because the command is passed to the system in a form that the system cannot process/understand. And sometimes, when everything appears perfect, it still won't work. To my knowledge, there is no way to debug and get behind the scenes to know exactly what is being passed to the system and what the system's response is. Sometimes something small, for example a missing quotation mark that ANSYS inadvertently stripped out, can throw things off. But again, I don't believe we have access to see what is being passed to debug it.
Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer.
-Matt

Hello,
Thanks Keith and Jim for your suggestions. With /syp I get the same error message. /syp is also calling cmd.exe.
I think Matt's suggestion (permission issue) is very promising. My colleague, who installed Ansys in his new computer, showed me today the install log and error files, and there you are, it seems the installer was not able of running cmd.exe either:
ANSYS installation: Di Nov 12 07:19:25 2024
Revision: 15.0
###### Error #######
'cmd.exe /c xcopy.exe /E /C /Y /R /I /F "C:\Users\koether\Desktop\ANSYS\ANSYS150\ANSYS150\Disk1\prereq" "C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v150\prereq"' terminated after 5 attempts with the following error(s):
Unknown error
Exit Code: 1Unknown error
Exit Code: 1Unknown error
Exit Code: 1Unknown error
Exit Code: 1Unknown error
Exit Code: 1
--------------------------------------->
That should copy folder prereq into the users installation folder. In my computer I do have this prereq directory in my computer, but I couldn't find it in his. Or maybe it is xcopy that's failing.
I've contacted our IT, but again, no answer so far.
Our ASD commented, as expected, that 15 is a very old version developed for an earlier version of Windows. Yes, but this is not the problem. In the rest of our computers, we use the same Ansys and Windows versions, and there is no problem at all. But to be sure, I told my colleague to install a newer version, the 2024 R2.01 version. We get the same installer error message, and /sys is not working either.
I'll keep you updated.
Thanks again for your support. I got much better support from you than from our IT or ASD!
Best regards,
Félix

A few thoughts came to mind...
Ensure you right click and choose Run As Administrator when installing Setup.EXE. That was a very common problem when I worked for one of the big Channel Partners. In fact, you should also use Run As Admin when uninstalling too.
Since you now installed a version newer than v15, I would uninstall it before re-attempting v15. It's always recommended to install the desired versions in order of release. Skipping versions is acceptable, but the desired versions should be installed in chronological order of release.
Yes, v15 works on newer operating systems. My personal Win11 machine successfully runs Workbench back to v12 (maybe earlier, but I didn't install anything earlier). The only reason a newer OS would be problematic is because IT fiddled with the system setup.

Thanks again Matt for your thoughts.
Finally I found the culprit: it was the environment variable PATH. For unknown reasons, the path in my colleague's computer didn't include "C:\WINDOWS\System32". In this folder there is a copy of cmd.exe. After adding this folder to the path variable, command /sys is working again.
My colleague swears that he didn't change anything at all in the environment variables. I guess our IT department didn't set the proper value, but we'll never know.
Again, many thanks to all of you who take the time to answer my question.
