ANSYS Mechanical Licenses @ 2021R2

I haven't tried 2021R2 yet, but here is the workaround for sharing a license between Spaceclaim and Mechanical in previous versions

  1. edit geometry as usual in SC
  2. Go to the WB project page, click save for the project - THIS IS THE STEP THAT MAKES SC RELEASE THE LICENSE
  3. Double-click the Mechanical system to pull the changes from SC.

I've found that if SC has unsaved changes it tends to hang the license.  Maybe the new behavior is just this on steroids?

Maybe I'll hold off on upgrading to 2021Rx for a while.

Matt and everyone,

The "read-only" issue is happening with SpaceClaim too!
When it happens to SpaceClaim - oh, wow - it is just awful!
I couldn't imagine that anyone could ever work like this.
That awful pop-up read-only window is relentless .. well, maybe for an annoyed user like me.
It even affects exiting from SpaceClaim!
You have to be certain that one SC window is closed and then you can exit the other one.
Oh, and when SpaceClaim in in read-only mode, you can't really tell.
So, if you have 5 windows open, which one is the one that isn't in read-only mode?

Matt, I want to recognize the hint that you gave me:  go into the license tools and check the license status.
Sure enough, I have only checked out one license of SpaceClaim!
And that is even when I have the "share a single license" checkbox Unchecked.

I closed out everything and rebooted the machine.  That didn't help.
I tried the old trick, AppData/Roaming/ANSYS/v***_old.  That didn't help.

I figured it out though!  Here are the steps.  LOL 1. Check the "share a single license" checkbox and exit.  That didn't help - as it shoudn't.
2. Open WB again and UN-check the "share a single license" checkbox and exit.
3. Open WB again and the "read-only" issue goes away.  (of course, if you have enough licenses available).

So, keep those steps in mind, if this ever happens to you.
And please let me know if this ever helps anyone.

Irene,
You are not alone in noticing odd behavior after the upgrade. I admit to not having been rigorous in my troubleshooting as you have up to this point but just this morning I had to pop open ANSLIC_ADMIN to debug an issue. In my experience at least, ANSYS has never been great about releasing licenses after closing out Mechanical and I feel like it's getting worse with each release.

Not a helpful response I suppose but will feed anything back I hear about a resolution.

Hi everyone,

I've been using Mechanical 2021R2 and when I attempt to post-process several cases at a time, I can't seem to post process them at the same time.  In past versions, I could.  For instance, when creating an animation (already too long of a process), it seems that I can only create them one at a time - not in parallel.  This is driving me nuts and I can't spend time to recreate the models in an older version.  When one analysis is reading the results or creating animations, all other analyses are in a "read-only configuration".

I have checked the following:

  1. Project Page/Tools/Options/Project Management - Share a single license between applications when possible is Unchecked.
  2. Mechanical/File/Licensing/License Options was set to have the Mechanical Enterprise PrepPost check out first.  I thought that was the issue so I switched to Mechanical Enterprise to check out first.  Then, I closed out of Workbench and reloaded it which should have activated the changes.  However, I get the same behavior as described above.

Is there anything else that I should try?  Have others ran into this issue?  Post processing is already a time consuming activity, I can't afford to have this license issue stop me from post-processing in parallel.

All,

I don't regret upgrading to 2021R2 - a simple "resetting" of that checkbox (share a single license) worked for me.
Although it involves exiting and entering WB multiple times, I can report that I have not had a "read-only"  issue today.
Now, both SpaceClaim and Mechanical are working fine.

I have checked the following: 1. Dear Mr. Slater,
I always follow the steps #2 and #3 you mentioned, every time I install a new WB release. That's why (perhaps) I didn't have the issue....

Regards,
Irene Slater

Irene,
You are not alone in noticing odd behavior after the upgrade.

EXTERNAL MESSAGE

Hi everyone,

I've been using Mechanical 2021R2 and when I attempt to post-process several cases at a time, I can't seem to post process them at the same time.  In past versions, I could.  For instance, when creating an animation (already too long of a process), it seems that I can only create them one at a time - not in parallel.  This is driving me nuts and I can't spend time to recreate the models in an older version.  When one analysis is reading the results or creating animations, all other analyses are in a "read-only configuration".

Is there anything else that I should try?  Have others ran into this issue?  Post processing is already a time consuming activity, I can't afford to have this license issue stop me from post-processing in parallel.
