Subject: Ansys classic - I am doing a static structural run - why no osav file
Hi All,
I had a single frame solution running it conked out at about 90% load and ended with a distorted element error. Was going to try to restart, but there was no .osav file.
Any ideas why?

I did a cdwrit (as there seems to be no status command for this) and nothing in the cdb file - so I'm assuming I get the defaults ncnv,1,
What should I set it to? 0?

Dan,
Check the status of the following commands for your run:
/FDELE
EMATWRITE
MSAVE
Also, your subject line says you are using ANSYS Classic, but if you are using ANSYS Mechanical to launch your solution session, check the Analysis Settings options to see whether it is set to retain or automatically delete temporary files after solution. This may delete your .osav file before the (incomplete) results are sent back to ANSYS Mechanical.

Hi Mitch,
I have checked /FDELE - I will check the others!
I've never kept up with Ansys Inc's nomenclature. I am using Ansys "APDL" (classic) - not Workbench. I live in the /prep7, /solu, /post1 universe.
I have gotten around the problem once with a CYGWIN (UNIX) script that copied the restart files every 10 seconds to a new name. I was able to use the OSAV file - restart and finish my run. But still interested in fixing this issue the right way.
Thanks to all for the tips. I realize I'm some of the last hold outs using classic.....

Dan,
Check the status of the following commands for your run:
/FDELE
EMATWRITE

Yep, my job was ending with a distorted element error. Even the Ansys output mentions I need the OSAV to do a restart.
It had been a long time since I've needed to use an osav file.

Hi Mitch,
Did
/FDELE,osav, keep
I was already getting an esav file, but did add EMATWRIT
MSAVE - I'm using sparse - so doesn't apply.
Still no joy....no OSAV file kept after an element formulation error.
Thanks for the ideas.

Dan,
Check the status of the following commands for your run:
/FDELE
EMATWRITE

Dan,
I believe that in order to have an osav file that ANSYS had to have created an esav file in a previous iteration/substep.
I assume when you said:
I had a single frame solution running it conked out at about 90% load and ended with a distorted element error.
that the run successfully completed one or more substeps before terminating due to the distorted element? How many substeps have been successfully completed?
If for some reason ANSYS is terminating on the first substep of the run, perhaps there will be no osav, only an esav file. Also, my recollection of single frame restarts is that sometimes one had to manually copy the osav file to esav, or vice versa, depending on where in the equilibrium iteration process the run terminated.
Can you just restart using the esav file, instead of osav? Maybe whatever esav file you have contains the previous successful element state, and has not yet been moved to osav and reformed due to the distorted element error?
I am using Ansys "APDL" (classic) - not Workbench. I live in the /prep7, /solu, /post1 universe.
There is much to like about that world; most things worked (present situation excepted). And the scripting ability is pretty amazing and straight forward.
I have gotten around the problem once with a CYGWIN (UNIX) script that copied the restart files every 10 seconds to a new name. I was able to use the OSAV file - restart and finish my run. But still interested in fixing this issue the right way.
Hmmm, I used to have a Unix script that would clear the X window and list all files in the solution directory containing jobname (ls -l $1.* ) every few seconds. That way I could at least keep an eye on what was going on, and if some file suddenly appeared or disappeared, I could look in the jobname.out, jobname.stat, or jobname.mntr files to see what ANSYS was doing at that time. At least that would let you know if it was even creating an osav file at some point or not creating it at all.

Hi Mitch,
To our points...
-
I get a whole bunch of substeps. The job in question got 80% of the way to the end when it conked.
-
Yes I do get an OSAV while it is running. As I said, I reran the above job - manually copying the restart files outside the program - and I could restart from my OSAV filel.
-
I HAD to use the osav because the error at the crash was a distorted element. I tried the esav, but Ansys said it was corrupt.
I would say based on my experience and the responses here that this is a real Ansys bug - I hope there are still Ansys Inc people here lurking.

Dan,
I believe that in order to have an osav file that ANSYS had to have created an esav file in a previous iteration/substep.

Dan,
Check the status of the following commands for your run:
/FDELE
EMATWRITE
